Poem: “Mother and Child” by: R. S. Thomas

No clouds overhead;

no troubles freckling

the maid’s eye. The shadows

are immediate and are thrown

by upholstered branches,

not by that angled

event that from beyond

the horizon puts its roots

down. This is Eden

over again. The child

holds out both his hands

for the breast’s apple. The snake is asleep.
