Today is my sister, Dawn Mari's, 22nd memorial, and this is the first year that she and her younger sister, Dara, are together in heaven. I wrote this little poem to ponder their time together in eternal life, and the joy Dawn Mari must feel to be able to tend towards Dara's entrance into heaven. Dara looked after Dawn Mari in the early years of their lives, and now Dawn Mari can return her generous love.
Your older sister, with special needs, you were her best friend.
She relied upon you for everything, and you were there.
A sister’s love reaches into the deep.
And as you aged, your lives changed.
You set out for your freedom and found new burdens,
But when you returned home, she called your name.
She always called your name, one of the few words she knew.
She smiled with excitement when you visited,
She blew out the candles on your cake,
She listened to the songs that you taught her,
She knew how much you did for her, how much love you gave her,
And she depended upon your goodness
She always remembered her soul mate.
And now you are gone from us,
But we know that you are with her.
She is holding you now, caressing your wounds, helping you heal,
Singing you songs, speaking the words she never could before.
She is returning to you generously what you so freely gave her.
Rest in her arms; let her care for you; hear her voice,
And see her smile as her best friend is by her side once again.
And forever.
