Ezekiel 2:2-5; Psalm 123; 2 Corinthians 12:7-10; Mark 6:1-6

 

Today’s Scripture speaks of rejecting the prophetic voices that are difficult to receive and yet are for our own good. Few people like to hear a prophet speaks to tell them what to do, and prophets typically foretell Gods’ presence in the events that are affecting the community. Ezekiel says nothing more than God’s prophet is among you. St. Paul tells us that his ministry is impeded from telling the good news to the Gentiles because there are traditionalist Jews acting as his thorn in the flesh. Paul accepts all the challenges of a rejected prophet for the sake of building the kingdom. Jesus is likewise demeaned by his own villagers who mock him for the wisdom he achieved somehow. They lack faith in him and in God because they know the man too well.

 

Today we have false prophets who are glad to tell us what to do, how to think, how to act, and what news sources to watch. The internet, advertising, TV, and enticements from consumer and retail sources appeal to our sense of self, but often it helps us to build up our false selves, which we all develop. The self is wounded by society in many ways. It is often a flight from reality and a prolongation of spiritual infancy, in which we have partial belief that we are the center of the universe. The false self develops illusions of autonomy, self-sufficiency, or centrality, but illusions are never the truth. We can often become people who take excessive pride in ourselves or we are always thinking of our inadequacies. Neither of these are our true selves, and God does not want us to reside in that false self, for God will do everything to take our distorted view of self and restore us to our true identity.

 

Ironically, for us to see ourselves clearly, we have to look away from ourselves and to gaze upon God, who helps us take off our masks. What does God have to say to us? When you think about your sin, God does not hate you for it, but God is filled with wonder at who you are and is pleased with the striving to do what is good and right. God also does not despise you because someone else sinned against you. God comes to your defense to say, “I’m sorry that happened to you.” God does not focus upon your guilt and shame because God wants to be in a healthy relationship with you more than you can imagine. If you could see how God sees you, you would do everything you can to grow into the image. We must learn to see others as God sees us. This gives us a chance to learn a lot about God, who will expand the images that we have of God. Ironically, when we love others, we love ourselves. We move away from our self-reflection to focus upon God and the goodness of others. 

 

For our soul to be free, we need to focus upon the gaze of God and the love of Christ. The soul seeks the kingdom of God and wants to follow the ideals set forth in the Sermon on the Mount. Christ wants us to be in our right minds, in right relationship with him in order to recognize his image in others, where each person’s inherent dignity is respected and honored, where illusions are stripped bare, and we can inch further to the truth about God. We are made for freedom, and when we move towards the kingdom of God, many will reject our forward progress and will tell us we are on the wrong path, but we continue to learn the truth about God, and we learn to contemplate God as God contemplates us, and we are caught in the lasting gaze with the Divine where we find ourselves knowing deep down the our real selves are in a cosmic dance with God. We will love and see the world as God loves and sees the world.

Saturday (Genesis 49) Jacob gave his sons this charge: “Since I am about to be taken to my people, bury me with my fathers in the cave that lies in the field of Ephron the Hittite, the cave in the field of Machpelah, facing on Mamre, in the land of Canaan,
the field that Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite for a burial ground.

 

Gospel: 

Monday: (Matthew 9)  While Jesus was speaking, an official came forward, knelt down before him, and said, “My daughter has just died. But come, lay your hand on her, and she will live.” Jesus rose and followed him, and so did his disciples.

 

Tuesday: (Matthew 9) A demoniac who could not speak was brought to Jesus,
and when the demon was driven out the mute man spoke. The crowds were amazed and said, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”

 

Wednesday (Matthew 9) Jesus summoned his Twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out and to cure every disease and every illness.

 

Thursday (Matthew 10) ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give. Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts; no sack for the journey, or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking stick.

 

Friday (Matthew 10) “Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves;
so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves. But beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans.

 

Saturday (Matthew 10) Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

 

Saints of the Week

 

July 5: Elizabeth of Portugal (1271-1336), was from the kingdom of Aragon begore she married Denis, king of Portugal, at age 12. Her son twice rebelled against the king and Elizabeth helped them reconcile. After he husband's death, she gave up her rank and joined the Poor Clares for a life of simplicity. 

 

July 5: Anthony Mary Zaccaria, priest (1502-1539) was a medical doctor who founded the Barnabites because of his devotion to Paul and Barnabas and the Angelics of St. Paul, a woman's cloistered order. He encouraged the laity to work alongside the clergy to care for the poor. 

 

July 6: Maria Goretti, martyr (1890-1902) was a poor farm worker who was threatened by Alessandro, a 20-year old neighbor. When she rebuffed his further advances, he killed her, but on her deathbed, she forgave him. He later testified on her behalf during her beatification process, which occurred in 1950.

 

July 9: Augustine Zhao Rong, priest and companions, Chinese martyrs (1648-1930) were 120 Chinese martyrs that included priests, children, parents, catechists and common laborers. Christians were persecuted throughout Chinese history. Augustine Zhao Rong was a diocesan priest who was brought to the faith after the example of the French missionary bishop Dufresse. Zhao Rong was arrested in 1815 and died in prison.

• July 5, 1592. The arrest of Fr. Robert Southwell at Uxenden Manor, the house of Mr Bellamy. Tortured and then transferred to the Tower, he remained there for two and a half years. 
• July 6, 1758. The election to the papacy of Clement XIII who would defend the Society against the Jansenists and the Bourbon Courts of Europe. 
• July 7, 1867. The beatification of the 205 Japanese Martyrs, 33 of them members of the Society of Jesus. 
• July 8, 1767. D'Aubeterre wrote to De Choiseul: "It is impossible to obtain the Suppression from the Pope [Clement XIII]; it must be wrested from him by occupying papal territory."

Para que nuestra alma sea libre, debemos centrarnos en la mirada de Dios y el amor de Cristo. El alma busca el reino de Dios y quiere seguir los ideales establecidos en el Sermón de la Montaña. Cristo quiere que estemos en nuestro sano juicio, en una relación correcta con él para reconocer su imagen en los demás, donde se respete y honre la dignidad inherente de cada persona, donde las ilusiones se desnuden y podamos avanzar hacia la verdad acerca de Dios. . Estamos hechos para la libertad, y cuando avanzamos hacia el reino de Dios, muchos rechazarán nuestro progreso y nos dirán que estamos en el camino equivocado, pero continuamos aprendiendo la verdad acerca de Dios y aprendemos a contemplar a Dios. mientras Dios nos contempla, y quedamos atrapados en la mirada perdurable con lo Divino donde nos encontramos sabiendo en el fondo que nuestro ser real está en una danza cósmica con Dios. Amaremos y veremos el mundo como Dios ama y ve el mundo.

Wisdom 1:13-15, 2:23-24; Psalm 30; 2 Corinthians 8:7-15; Mark 5:21-43

 

We meet the God who values the fulfillment of life and the well-being of all people, and this tells us something about God’s hopes for us. God is rooting for us and intends our very best. I find it comforting to hear that God did not make death and formed us to be imperishable. I know how sad I feel when I hear someone has died, and I consider that God is also sad, though the person becomes alive to God in a wholly new way. 

 

We have this thought reinforced to us in the Gospel passage about the daughter of Jairus and the hemorrhaging woman. This is a God of life for God does not want us to suffer or to be sick or to die. In order for people to see God’s heart, Jesus raises the young girl back to life to enjoy the fullness of life. The young girl was given a chance to make something good of her life; the hemorrhaging woman could now rejoin society as a member equal in dignity. Thanks be to God for all of you in healing professions who give someone else another chance in life.

 

Mary Oliver, the Cape Cod poet, asked, “What are we to do with our one wild and precious life? While some people have an easier path to make a fulfilling life, others are thwarted by life’s challenges, which breaks my heart. Some are not privileged with good health, others are wracked by addictions or mental health issues, some are not given the breaks needed to flourish and blossom as easily as others. Some people are held back by closed attitudes and fears of failure, fears of intimacy, fears of trusting. Some lack of self-esteem and cannot accept the opportunities that are presented to them. None of us are whole, and yet some of us, are able to build upon the experiences we have made. With whatever we have been given by God, we have to cooperate with God’s desire for us to flourish as fully as we can, even if it is not to the extent of others. The goal is to do our very best, knowing there is no equality in gifts and abilities or conditions, but the call is the same for each of us. If we compare, we despair, and we are not to ever allow ourselves to despair. 

 

What can we do to help give people a life-giving boost, greater confidence? Or to encourage them to live with greater joy and satisfaction. One must be able to let God love them, to be put in a place where God can show them kindness and to know they are lovable. It is a tragedy if someone does not really know if one is loved by God. With God’s support and encouragement, a person can reach impressive heights, each according to one’s ability, but that foundation is knowing that God absolutely backs you up and looks upon you with reverent amazement. We don’t have to be great. We just have to try. Life’s bounty is in the striving. We have to let God’s affection for us lead us on and give us new life, especially life to those places of pain and hurt, to those areas where we feel stunted. Those will be our sources of grace and healing, so much so that we can stand confidently in front of the world and feel no fear, because God’s new life is more potent than any other force. God’s greater glory will be shown through us, and we’ll stand taller and straighter, knowing that we are shining like the sun.

Tuesday: (Genesis 13) Abram was very rich in livestock, silver, and gold. Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents, so that the land could not support them if they stayed together; their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together. There were quarrels between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and those of Lot’s.

 

Wednesday: (Genesis 15) When the sun had set and it was dark, there appeared a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch, which passed between those pieces. Saints of the Week

 

June 27: Cyril of Alexandria, bishop and doctor (376-444), presided over the Council of Ephesus that fought Nestorian the heresy. Cyril claimed, contrary to Nestorius, that since the divine and human in Jesus were so closely united that it was appropriate to refer to Mary was the mother of God. Because he condemned Nestorius, the church went through a schism that lasted until Cyril's death. Cyril's power, wealth, and theological expertise influenced many as he defended the church against opposing philosophies. 

 

June 28: Irenaeus, bishop and martyr (130-200) was sent to Lyons as a missionary to combat the persecution the church faced in Lyons. He was born in Asia Minor and became a disciple of Polycarp who was a disciple of the Apostle John. Irenaeus asserted that the creation was not sinful by nature but merely distorted by sin. As God created us, God redeemed us. Therefore, our fallen nature can only be saved by Christ who took on our form in the Incarnation. Irenaeus refutation of heresies laid the foundations of Christian theology.

 

June 29: Peter and Paul, apostles (first century) are lumped together for a feast day because of their extreme importance to the early and contemporary church. Upon Peter's faith was the church built; Paul's efforts to bring Gentiles into the faith and to lay out a moral code was important for successive generations. It is right that they are joined together as their work is one, but with two prongs. For Jesuits, this is a day that Ignatius began to recover from his illness after the wounds he sustained at Pamplona. It marked a turning point in his recovery.

 

June 30: The First Holy Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church (c. 64) were martyrs under Nero's persecution in 64. Nero reacted to the great fire in Rome by falsely accusing Christians of setting it. While no one believed Nero's assertions, Christians were humiliated and condemned to death in horrible ways. This day always follows the feast of the martyrs, Sts. Peter and Paul.

 

July 1: Junipero Serra, priest, was a Franciscan missionary who founded missions in Baja and traveled north to California starting in 1768. The Franciscans established the missions during the suppression of the Jesuits. San Diego, San Francisco, and Santa Clara are among the most famous. Serra’s statue is in the U.S. Capitol to represent California.

 

July 2: Bernard Realino, John Francis Regis, Francis Jerome, S.J. are known for their preaching skills that drew many to the faith, including many French Hugeunots. Regis and his companions preached Catholic doctrine to children and assisted many struck by the plague in Frances. Regis University in Denver, Colorado is named after John Regis. 

 

July 3: Thomas, apostle, is thought to have been an apostle to India and Pakistan and he is best remembered as the one who “doubted” the resurrection of Jesus. The Gospels, however, testify to his faithfulness to Jesus during his ministry. The name, Thomas, stands for “twin,” but no mention is made of his twin’s identity.

• June 27, 1978. Bernard Lisson, a mechanic, and Gregor Richert, a parish priest, were shot to death at St Rupert's Mission, Sinoia, Zimbabwe. 
• June 28, 1591. Fr. Leonard Lessius's teaching on grace and predestination caused a great deal of excitement and agitation against the Society in Louvain and Douai. The Papal Nuncio and Pope Gregory XIV both declared that his teaching was perfectly orthodox. 
• June 29, 1880. In France the law of spoliation, which was passed at the end of March, came into effect and all the Jesuit Houses and Colleges were suppressed. 
• June 30, 1829. The opening of the Twenty-first General Congregation of the order, which elected Fr. John Roothan as General. 
• July 1, 1556. The beginning of St Ignatius's last illness. He saw his three great desires fulfilled: confirmation of the Institute, papal approval of the Spiritual Exercises, and acceptance of the Constitutions by the whole Society. 
• July 2, 1928. The Missouri Province was divided into the Missouri Province and the Chicago Province. In 1955 there would be a further subdivision: Missouri divided into Missouri and Wisconsin; Chicago divided into Chicago and Detroit. 
• July 3, 1580. Queen Elizabeth I issued a statute forbidding all Jesuits to enter England.

Nos encontramos con el Dios que valora la realización de la vida y el bienestar de todas las personas , y esto nos dice algo sobre las esperanzas de Dios para nosotros . Dios nos apoya y se esfuerza al máximo. Encuentro reconfortante escuchar que Dios no hizo la muerte y nos formó para ser imperecederos. Sé lo triste que me siento cuando escucho que alguien ha muerto, y considero que Dios también está triste, aunque la persona se vuelve viva para Dios de una manera completamente nueva.

 

Tenemos este pensamiento reforzado para nosotros en el pasaje del Evangelio sobre la hija de Jairo y la mujer con hemorragia. Este es un Dios de vida porque Dios no quiere que suframos ni que estemos enfermos o que muramos. Para que la gente vea el corazón de Dios, Jesús resucita a la joven para que disfrute de la plenitud de la vida. La joven tuvo la oportunidad de hacer algo bueno con su vida; la mujer con hemorragia podía ahora reincorporarse a la sociedad como un miembro igual en dignidad. Gracias a Dios por todos ustedes en profesiones sanadoras que le dan a otra persona otra oportunidad en la vida.

Viernes ( Génesis 17 ) Cuando Abram tenía noventa y nueve años, el SEÑOR se le apareció y le dijo: “Yo soy el Dios Todopoderoso. Camina en mi presencia y sé libre de culpa ". Dios le dijo además a Abraham: “En cuanto a tu esposa Sarai, no la llames Sarai; su nombre será Sara. La bendeciré y de ella te daré un hijo.

27 de junio: Cirilo de Alejandría, obispo y médico (376-444), presidió el Concilio de Éfeso que combatió la herejía nestoriana. Cirilo afirmó, contrariamente a Nestorio, que dado que lo divino y lo humano en Jesús estaban tan estrechamente unidos, era apropiado referirse a María como la madre de Dios. Debido a que condenó a Nestorio, la iglesia atravesó un cisma que duró hasta la muerte de Cyril. El poder, la riqueza y la experiencia teológica de Cirilo influyeron en muchos mientras defendía a la iglesia contra filosofías opuestas.

 

28 de junio: Ireneo, obispo y mártir (130-200) fue enviado a Lyon como misionero para combatir la persecución que enfrentaba la iglesia en Lyon. Nació en Asia Menor y se convirtió en discípulo de Policarpo, quien fue discípulo del apóstol Juan. Ireneo afirmó que la creación no era pecaminosa por naturaleza, sino simplemente distorsionada por el pecado. Como Dios nos creó, Dios nos redimió. Por lo tanto, nuestra naturaleza caída solo puede ser salvada por Cristo, quien tomó nuestra forma en la Encarnación. La refutación de Ireneo de las herejías sentó las bases de la teología cristiana.
