The arrival of life brings dramatic intelligibility to the universe. life is dramatic, as the scientist and philosopher has observed, simply because its defining attribute is that of striving. Striving, seeking straining, trying, groping aiming, resisting, struggling to accomplish something — these are distinguishing marks of life. Life involves much more than striving, I realize but it is especially their anticipatory quality that lets the organism stand out clearly as alive instead of lifeless. In life’s most primitive forms striving may be negligible but as life grows in complexity this quality becomes increasingly more manifest
