Poem: An Ode to the Sun on the Solstice

For too long, the cold has reigned.

Long have I desired to see your lingering rays.

The months have passed and you have brightened our days.
Day by day I welcomed you with anticipation of fullness and joy and the day has now arrived.
Your solstice is here.

Why, o why is my joy gone?
You just got here and now you are leaving. Can’t you stay for a while?
It is what I have been waiting for for so long.
Please?
Life should begin now, and yet you now begin your long goodbye.
It is not fair.
Let’s dance and frolic and sing. I had such high hopes.

I understand. I know you must go. I relent.
Your brightness will remain in my memory and I will cherish it for as long as I can.
