It’s all about the homecoming:
the fatted calf, the robe, the ring,
the hugs, hilarity, and partying.
Who wouldn’t want to rush right home
to all of that?
But what I’d like to know is this:
What drove the nameless, shameless boy
into distant countries in the first place?
Was it greed or recklessness or boredom,
or that tired old cliché, “to find himself”?
Or did he need to get as far as he could run
from his righteous older brother?
Ah, could that be why the sinful son departed
and why, to tell the truth, their prodigal father
did go a little wild when he returned?
