Spirituality: A Prayer for our Nation

Loving God,

Our nation casts votes for its civic leaders this week, and this election cycle brings us many complicated feelings that are sometimes difficult to share. Frequently, it is difficult to know with whom we can safely share our thoughts and feelings, and we are sometimes surprised at the words and attitudes that we learn about others, especially those we thought we knew well. Help us this week as we step gingerly through an emotionally fragile time, that you may give us the breath of peace that will enable us to endure the anxieties.

Help us to believe that goodwill will prevail. We know that the power of this world is often forceful, tinged with violent actions and words, filled with scheming, and manipulative towards one’s own self-serving ends, but your power teaches us that true power is gentleness, free from violence, is one that honors the dignity of the most vulnerable among us, and builds up the community in grace. Guide our elected civic leaders to promote the common good, to respect justice that is marked by honoring the integrity of each person, to endow everyone with a path towards wholeness and happiness, and to preserve that truth that rightfully reflects your goodness.

We pray that you remain with us during these coming days as we build a corner of our world that is infused with your glory. Help us recreate our community that mirrors your kingdom and its values. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
