John Vianney

Vianney is best known as the Cure of Arts and is the patron saint of diocesan priests. He is known for his ministry of the sacrament of reconciliation because hundreds of visitors and pilgrims visited him daily. He heard confessions from 12 to 16 hours a day and gave a short lesson each morning. Though he wanted a more contemplative life, monastics sent him back to the parish where he performed such necessary ministerial work.

He is important to diocesan priests who do not have a distinct spirituality like religious orders. His model of ministry is inspirational and shows the importance of listening to parishioners. Most parish priests work tirelessly and do not get the relief needed for a healthy balance of rest, work, and recreation. As secular priests, they deserve our thanks for their important presence to the people of God.
