Prayer: Francis de Sales
Fear is the first temptation that the enemy presents to those who have resolved to serve God, for soon as they are shown what perfection requires of them, they think, “Alas, I shall never be able to do it.” But you are armed and encompassed with the truth of God and with God’s word. Having called you, God will strengthen you and will give you the grace to persevere.
Jesus certainly recognized the human proclivity to fear as he repeated so often, "Be not afraid." Yes, fear paralyzes us and prevents us from doing great things. We must always remember what St. Francis de Sales wrote: "God will strengthen you and will give you the grace to persevere". This prayer is a great reminder of who we are.
ReplyDeleteAs a contemporary of Ignatius, each saint understood the paralyzing effect of fear. Look at all the events each man went through in their pursuit of holiness. Persevere.
