These bottom line in today’s message is that God is at the heart of every human relationship because we are built for community. In Genesis, humans are given a special privilege and responsibility to care and protect the environment and all living things, but there is special bond between humans that echoes God’s relationship with us. In the Gospel, Jesus reminds the Pharisees that our commitment to one another in sacred, whether it is in the sacrament of marriage, the care and protection of children, or in human friendship. We cannot cut ourselves off from meaningful relationships easily; it requires thoughtful discernment when we can always respect the image of God that is present in each person.

 

  While we are made for community, it is common for us to pull ourselves apart from each other when we most need human compassion. I think of two situations I encountered this week. A man in his mid-70’s placed his wife in elderly day-care as her dementia increases. He does not want to answer emails or talk on the phone because he feels extra sensitive and may break down because he can no longer take care of the love of his life the way he wants. He is afraid of showing his tears even though his tears show the deep extent of his care and concern. He wants prayers and yet does not want anyone to know how much he is hurting. Because he has withdrawn, the community does not know how to support him.

 

A woman approached me and asked to pray for a dear relative who may be pregnant after suffering two previous miscarriages. The young woman is full of hope but does not want anyone to know because of her history, but she is a bundle of nerves because she wants to bear a child. She has asked that her relative keep her secret, so people do not worry. They each suffer in silence, and it is precisely the time they need the prayerful support of those who love them. These are the privileged times we need to come together to bear with one another’s burdens.

 

If we do not work at reconciling ourselves with loved ones, it will be difficult for us to experience the harmony that gives us the integrity we seek in relationships. A friend recently told me that she found out at her brother’s funeral that he duped her for many years for her generosity. Though she took him at his word, he deceived her, which only became known upon death, and there was not chance at reconciliation. Think of how different this relationship could have been in they saw the presence of God in each other. God is one who heals, unites, reconciles, calls forth goodness, and brings harmony. None of us want to betray or mistreat God, and we would treat each person with such goodness if we recognized that God is always at the heart of our relationships. As we move through this coming week, perhaps we can look at each of our relationships, the solid ones, and broken ones, and ponder how we can honor God through each person. We may need to pause, and look hard, but if we do, we may find that God is struggling to keep us committed to one another.

Saints of the Week

 

October 3: Francis Borgia, S.J. became a duke at age 33. When his wife died and his eight children were grown, he joined the Jesuits. His preaching brought many people to the church and when he served as Superior General, the Society increased dramatically in Spain and Portugal. He established many missions in the new territories. 

 

October 4: Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) was from the wealthy Bernardone family who sold silk cloths. After serving as soldier as a prisoner of war, Francis chose to serve God and the poor. He felt called to repair God's house, which he thought was a church. His father was angry that he used family money so he disinherited him. He began to preach repentance and recruited others to his way of life. His order is known for poverty, simplicity, humble service, and delighting in creation.

 

October 6: Bruno, priest (1030-1101), became a professor at Rheims and diocesan chancellor. He gave up his riches and began to live as a hermit with six other men. They had disdain for the rampant clerical corruption. The bishop of Grenoble gave them land in the Chartreuse mountains and they began the first Carthusian monastery. After serving in Rome for a few years, Bruno was given permission to found a second monastery in Calabria.

 

October 7: Our Lady of the Rosary recalls the events in 1571 of the Christian naval victory over the Turks at Lepanto near Corinth. Victory was credited to Mary as confraternities prayed the rosary for her intercession. 

 

October 9: Denis, bishop and martyr, and companion martyrs (d. 258), was the first bishop of Paris. He died during the Decian persecutions by beheading at Montmarte, the highest hill in the city. Lore has it that he picked up his head after the beheading and walked six miles while giving a sermon. Denis was sent to Paris to bring Christianity and was thereby called, “The apostle to the Gauls.”

 

October 9: John Leonardi (1542-1609), was a pharmacist’s assistant before studying for the priesthood. He became interested in the reforms of the Council of Trent and gathered laymen around him to work in prisons and hospitals. He contracted the plague while ministering to those who were sick. He founded the Clerks Regular of the Mother of God to care for the sick.

• October 3, 1901. In France, religious persecution broke out afresh with the passing of Waldeck Rousseau's "Loi d'Association." 
• October 4, 1820. In Rome, great troubles arose before and during the Twentieth General Congregation, caused by Fr. Petrucci's intrigues. He sought to wreck the Society and was deposed from his office as Vicar General, though supported by Cardinal della Genga (afterwards Leo XII). 
• October 5, 1981. In a letter to Father General Arrupe, Pope John Paul II appointed Paolo Dezza as his personal delegate to govern the Society of Jesus, with Fr. Pittau as coadjutor. 
• October 6, 1773. In London, Dr James Talbot, the Vicar Apostolic, promulgated the Brief of Suppression and sent copies to Maryland and Pennsylvania. 
• October 7, 1819. The death of Charles Emmanuel IV. He had been King of Sardinia and Piedmont. He abdicated in 1802 and entered the Jesuits as a brother in 1815. He is buried in San Andrea Quirinale in Rome. 
• October 8, 1871. The Great Chicago Fire. Most of the city was destroyed, but it missed Holy Family, the Jesuit parish, as the fire turned north thanks to the prayers of Fr. Arnold Damen. The fire lasted three days; 250 were killed. 
• October 9, 1627. Jansenius left Louvain for Salamanca to foment antipathy against the Jesuits and thus prevent Philip IV from giving the Society a large college in Madrid. The theological faculty at Salamanca were hostile to the Society.

La conclusión del mensaje de hoy es que Dios está en el corazón de toda relación humana porque estamos construidos para la comunidad. En Génesis, los seres humanos tienen un privilegio y una responsabilidad especiales de cuidar y proteger el medio ambiente y todos los seres vivos, pero existe un vínculo especial entre los seres humanos que refleja la relación de Dios con nosotros. En el Evangelio, Jesús recuerda a los fariseos que nuestro compromiso mutuo es sagrado, ya sea en el sacramento del matrimonio, el cuidado y protección de los hijos o en la amistad humana. No podemos aislarnos fácilmente de las relaciones significativas; requiere un discernimiento reflexivo cuando siempre podemos respetar la imagen de Dios que está presente en cada persona.

 

 Si bien estamos hechos para la comunidad, es común que nos separemos unos de otros cuando más necesitamos la compasión humana. Pienso en dos situaciones que encontré esta semana. Un hombre de unos 70 años puso a su esposa en una guardería para ancianos a medida que aumentaba su demencia. No quiere contestar correos electrónicos o hablar por teléfono porque se siente muy sensible y puede romperse porque ya no puede cuidar al amor de su vida de la manera que él quiere. Tiene miedo de mostrar sus lágrimas a pesar de que sus lágrimas muestran la profundidad de su cuidado y preocupación. Quiere oraciones y, sin embargo, no quiere que nadie sepa cuánto le duele. Debido a que se ha retirado, la comunidad no sabe cómo apoyarlo.

 

Una mujer se me acercó y me pidió que orara por una querida pariente que podría estar embarazada después de haber sufrido dos abortos espontáneos anteriores. La joven está llena de esperanza pero no quiere que nadie lo sepa por su historia, pero está un manojo de nervios porque quiere tener un hijo. Ella le ha pedido a su pariente que mantenga su secreto, para que la gente no se preocupe. Cada uno sufre en silencio, y es precisamente el momento en el que necesitan el apoyo orante de quienes los aman. Estos son los momentos privilegiados en los que debemos unirnos para sobrellevar las cargas de los demás.

 

Si no trabajamos para reconciliarnos con nuestros seres queridos, será difícil para nosotros experimentar la armonía que nos da la integridad que buscamos en las relaciones. Una amiga me dijo recientemente que se enteró en el funeral de su hermano que él la engañó durante muchos años por su generosidad. Aunque ella le tomó la palabra, él la engañó, que solo se conoció después de la muerte, y no hubo posibilidad de reconciliación. Piense en lo diferente que pudo haber sido esta relación si vieron la presencia de Dios en el otro. Dios es alguien que sana, une, reconcilia, suscita bondad y trae armonía. Ninguno de nosotros quiere traicionar o maltratar a Dios, y trataríamos a cada persona con tanta bondad si reconociéramos que Dios está siempre en el centro de nuestras relaciones. A medida que avanzamos en la próxima semana, tal vez podamos ver cada una de nuestras relaciones, las sólidas y las rotas, y reflexionar sobre cómo podemos honrar a Dios a través de cada persona. Es posible que tengamos que hacer una pausa y mirar con atención, pero si lo hacemos, es posible que descubramos que Dios está luchando por mantenernos comprometidos el uno con el otro.

3 de octubre: Francis Borgia, SJ se convirtió en duque a los 33 años. Cuando su esposa murió y sus ocho hijos crecieron, se unió a los jesuitas. Su predicación atrajo a mucha gente a la iglesia y cuando se desempeñó como Superior General, la Sociedad aumentó dramáticamente en España y Portugal. Estableció muchas misiones en los nuevos territorios.

 

4 de octubre: Francisco de Asís (1181-1226) era de la rica familia Bernardone que vendía telas de seda. Después de servir como soldado como prisionero de guerra, Francisco eligió servir a Dios y a los pobres. Se sintió llamado a reparar la casa de Dios, que pensaba que era una iglesia. Su padre estaba enojado porque usó el dinero de la familia, por lo que lo desheredado. Comenzó a predicar el arrepentimiento y reclutó a otros para su estilo de vida. Su orden es conocida por la pobreza, la sencillez, el servicio humilde y el deleite en la creación.

 

6 de octubre: Bruno, sacerdote (1030-1101), se convierte en profesor en Reims y canciller diocesano. Renunció a sus riquezas y comenzó a vivir como ermitaño con otros seis hombres. Despreciaban la desenfrenada corrupción clerical. El obispo de Grenoble les cedió tierras en las montañas Chartreuse y comenzaron el primer monasterio cartujo. Después de servir en Roma durante unos años, Bruno recibió permiso para fundar un segundo monasterio en Calabria.

These readings point out a curiosity in our human nature – that we enjoy our privileges and we don’t like to share them. This point is depicted in the first reading when Eldad and Medad were given gifts by God, but it was not in the way the people intended. These two men were speaking truths about God, but they did not go into the tent to be commissioned by the Spirit with the seventy others. Instead they remained in the camp, and the Lord sought them out for ministry. Joshua protested because he did not understand what was going on, but Moses reassured him that they were indeed commissioned as prophets and that God calls people through supernatural means.

 

Almost the same type of event happens in the Gospel with the person who drove out demons in the name of Jesus, but he was not in the elite camp to which they belonged. Objectively, the man was a believer, was doing good works, spoke with right teaching, but was not of the same tribe. He was doing all the right things, but instead of celebrating his good works, John was jealous because he was not called along the same lines. Jesus reorients him to the unity that exists between people of goodwill. If someone is not working against us, perhaps it is better to be grateful and to encourage the person to continue as a friend and colleague. We find ourselves as tribal people and we forget about our allegiance to the good news of the Gospel.

 

If we choose, we can find so many things to divide us; If we choose, we can find so many things to unite us. The power is in where we want to direct our mind and our attitudes. In today’s world, we can separate ourselves along political lines, church beliefs, teaching philosophies, word choices, and so forth. We can do that and we do it regularly. The Gospel instructs us not to cause anyone who believes in Jesus to sin, and then Mark gives many ways that our actions can send us off to Gehenna. Our duty as Christians is to bring people together into communion and to celebrate that we are all about the same work ultimately. If we are not working together, we are hurting the church and God’s kingdom. 

 

We can choose to get along better, to practice kindness, to refrain from speaking what is on our minds, to choose the words that heal and bind. We can notice our places of privilege and recognize it is a gift that we have to use well and help others along the path of justice who do not have the same benefits. We can notice that we can expand our understanding and acceptance by testing our worldviews and assumptions, which allows us to settle our fears, jealousies, and worst imaginings. Mostly, we have to see the goodwill in other people, especially those who have different stories and perspectives, in order to see their inherent worth and dignity. We see a person made in the image of God who struggles as we do, who has a unique story, and is doing one’s best to get along in life. When we behold the person’s goodness, we desire the unity that Christ seeks for his church.

Tuesday: (Zechariah 8) “Come! let us go to implore the favor of the LORD”; and, “I too will go to seek the LORD.” Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem and to implore the favor of the LORD.

 

Wednesday: (Revelation 12) War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 

 

Thursday: (Nehemiah 8) The whole people gathered as one in the open space before the Water Gate, and they called upon Ezra the scribe to bring forth the book of the law of Moses which the LORD prescribed for Israel.

 

Friday (Baruch 1) During the Babylonian captivity, the exiles prayed: “Justice is with the Lord, our God; and we today are flushed with shame.

 

Saturday (Baruch 4) Fear not, my people! Remember, Israel, You were sold to the nations not for your destruction; It was because you angered God that you were handed over to your foes.

 

Gospel: 

Monday: (Luke 9) An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me,
and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.

 

Tuesday: (Luke 9) When the days for Jesus to be taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, and he sent messengers ahead of him.
On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. 

 

Wednesday (John 1) Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,
“Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him.” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”

 

Thursday (Luke 10) “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.

 

Friday (Luke 10) “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

 

Saturday (Matthew 18) “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?” He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.

 

Saints of the Week

 

September 26: Cosmas and Damian, martyrs (d. 287), were twins who became doctors. They were noted because they never charged anyone a medical fee. They died in the Diocletian persecution. Great miracles have been attributed to them and the Emperor Justinian is claimed to be healed through their intercession.

 

September 27: Vincent de Paul, priest (1581-1660), was a French peasant who selected to be chaplain at the Queen's household after his ordination. He provided food and clothing to the poor, including prostitutes, the sick, disabled, and homeless. He founded the Congregation of Missions (Vincentians) to preach and train clergy and he co-founded the Daughters of Charity with Louise de Marillac.

 

September 28: Wenceslaus, martyr (907-929), was raised a Christian by his grandmother while his mother and brother were opposed to Christianity. His brother opposed him when he became ruler of Bohemia in 922. He introduced strict reforms that caused great dissatisfaction among nobles and political adversaries. His brother invited him to a religious ceremony where he was killed in a surprise attack.

 

September 28: Lawrence Ruiz and 15 companion martyrs (seventeenth century), were killed in Nagasaki, Japan during 1633 and 1637. Most of these Christians were friends of the Dominicans. Lawrence, a Filipino, was a husband and father. He and these other missionaries served the Philippines, Formosa, and Japan.

 

September 29: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, archangels are long a part of Christian and Jewish scripture. Michael is the angel who fights against evil as the head of all the angels; Gabriel announces the messiah's arrival and the births of Jesus and John the Baptist; and Raphael is a guardian angel who protects Tobias on his journey. Together, they are venerated to represent all the angels during a three-day period.

 

September 30: Jerome, priest and doctor (342-420), studied Greek and Latin as a young man after his baptism by Pope Liberius. He learned Hebrew when he became a monk and after ordination he studied scripture with Gregory Nazianzen in Constantinople. He became secretary to the Pope when he was asked to translate the Bible into Latin.

 

October 1: These of Lisieux, doctor (1873-1897), entered the Carmelites at age 15 and died at age 24 from tuberculosis. During her illness, Pauline, her prioress, asked her to write about her life in the convent. These stories are captured in "The Story of a Soul." He focused on her "little way" of pursuing holiness in everyday life.

 

October 2: The Guardian Angels are messengers and intermediaries between God and humans. They help us in our struggle against evil and they serve as guardians, the feast we celebrate today. Raphael is one of the guardians written about in the Book of Tobit. A memorial was added to the Roman calendar In 1670 in thanksgiving for their assistance.

• September 26, 1605. At Rome, Pope Paul V orally declared St Aloysius to be one of the "Blessed." The official brief appeared on October 19. 
• September 27, 1540. Pope Paul III signed the Bull, Regimini Militantis Ecclesiae, which established the Society of Jesus. 
• September 28, 1572. Fifteen Jesuits arrived in Mexico to establish the Mexican Province. They soon opened a college. 
• September 29, 1558. In the Gesu, Rome, and elsewhere, the Jesuits began to keep Choir, in obedience to an order from Paul IV. This practice lasted less than a year, until the pope's death in August, 1559. 
• September 30, 1911. President William Howard Taft visited Saint Louis University and declared the football season open. 
• October 1, 1546. Isabel Roser was released from her Jesuit vows by St Ignatius after eight months. 
• October 2, 1964. Fr. General Janssens suffered a stroke and died three days later. During his generalate, the Society grew from 53 to 85 provinces, and from 28,839 to 35,968 members.

Números 11: 25-29 ; Salmo 19 ; James 5 : 1- 6 ; San Marcos 9 : 3 8 - 48

 

Estas lecturas señalan una curiosidad en nuestra naturaleza humana: que disfrutamos de nuestros privilegios y no nos gusta compartirlos. Este punto se describe en la primera lectura cuando Dios les dio regalos a Eldad y Medad , pero no fue de la manera que la gente pretendía. Estos dos hombres estaban hablando verdades acerca de Dios, pero no entraron en la tienda para ser comisionados por el Espíritu con los otros setenta. En cambio, permanecieron en el campamento, y el Señor los buscó para el ministerio. Josué protestó porque no entendía lo que estaba pasando, pero Moisés le aseguró que de hecho fueron comisionados como profetas y que Dios llama a la gente por medios sobrenaturales.

 

Casi el mismo tipo de evento ocurre en el Evangelio con la persona que expulsó demonios en el nombre de Jesús, pero no estaba en el campamento de élite al que pertenecían. Objetivamente, el hombre era un creyente, estaba haciendo buenas obras, hablaba con la enseñanza correcta, pero no era de la misma tribu. Estaba haciendo todas las cosas correctas, pero en lugar de celebrar sus buenas obras, John estaba celoso porque no lo llamaban de la misma manera. Jesús lo reorienta a la unidad que existe entre las personas de buena voluntad. Si alguien no está trabajando en nuestra contra, quizás sea mejor estar agradecido y animar a la persona a que continúe como amigo y colega. Nos encontramos como personas tribales y nos olvidamos de nuestra lealtad a las buenas nuevas del Evangelio.

 

Si elegimos, podemos encontrar tantas cosas que nos dividan; Si elegimos, podemos encontrar tantas cosas que nos unan. El poder está en donde queremos dirigir nuestra mente y nuestras actitudes. En el mundo de hoy, podemos separarnos por líneas políticas, creencias de la iglesia, filosofías de enseñanza, elección de palabras, etc. Podemos hacer eso y lo hacemos con regularidad. El Evangelio nos instruye que no hagamos pecar a nadie que crea en Jesús, y luego Marcos da muchas formas en que nuestras acciones pueden enviarnos al Gehena. Nuestro deber como cristianos es unir a las personas en comunión y celebrar que, en última instancia, todos somos el mismo trabajo. Si no trabajamos juntos, estamos dañando a la iglesia y al reino de Dios.

 

Podemos elegir llevarnos mejor, practicar la bondad, abstenernos de decir lo que tenemos en mente, elegir las palabras que sanan y unen. Podemos notar nuestros lugares de privilegio y reconocer que es un don que tenemos que usar bien y ayudar a otros en el camino de la justicia que no tienen los mismos beneficios. Podemos notar que podemos expandir nuestra comprensión y aceptación poniendo a prueba nuestras cosmovisiones y suposiciones , lo que nos permite resolver nuestros miedos , celos y peores imaginaciones. Sobre todo, tenemos que ver la buena voluntad en otras personas, especialmente en aquellos que tienen historias y perspectivas diferentes, para ver su valor y dignidad inherentes. Vemos a una persona creada a imagen de Dios que lucha como nosotros, que tiene una historia única y que está haciendo todo lo posible para llevarse bien en la vida. Cuando contemplamos la bondad de la persona, deseamos la unidad que Cristo busca para su iglesia.

Lunes: ( Zacarías 8 ) Estoy intensamente celoso de Sion, movido a una ira de celos por ella. Así habla el Señor: Yo restaurado a Sion, y moraré dentro de Jerusalén; Je rusalem se llamará Ciudad de la Verdad, y el monte de Jehová de los ejércitos, el monte santo.

 

Martes: ( Zacarías 8 ) “¡Ven! vayamos a implorar el favor del SEÑOR ”; y "yo también iré a buscar al SEÑOR". Muchos pueblos y naciones fuertes vendrán a buscar al Señor de los ejércitos en Jerusalén ya implorar el favor del Señor.

 

Miércoles: ( Apocalipsis 12 ) La guerra estalló en el cielo; Miguel y sus ángeles lucharon contra el dragón. El dragón y sus ángeles se defendieron, pero no prevalecieron y ya no había lugar para ellos en el cielo.

 

Jueves: ( Nehemías 8 ) Todo el pueblo se reunió como uno solo en el espacio abierto delante de la Puerta de las Aguas, y llamaron al escriba Esdras para que publicara el libro de la ley de Moisés que el SEÑOR prescribió para Israel.

 

Viernes ( Baruc 1 ) Durante el cautiverio en Babilonia, los exiliados oraron: “La justicia es con el Señor, nuestro Dios; y hoy estamos enrojecidos de vergüenza .

 

Sábado ( Baruc 4 ) ¡ No temas, pueblo mío! Recuerda, Israel, que fuiste vendido a las naciones, no para tu destrucción; Fue porque enojaste a Dios por lo que fuiste entregado a tus enemigos.

 

Evangelio: 

Lunes: ( Lucas 9 ) Surgió una discusión entre los discípulos sobre cuál de ellos era el mayor. Jesús se dio cuenta de la intención de sus corazones y tomó a un niño y lo puso a su lado y les dijo: “El que recibe a este niño en mi nombre, a mí me recibe, y el que me recibe a mí, recibe al que me envió.  

 

Martes: ( Lucas 9 ) Cuando se cumplieron los días para que Jesús fuera tomado, decidió decididamente viajar a Jerusalén, y envió mensajeros delante de él. En el camino entraron en una aldea samaritana para prepararse para su recepción allí, pero no lo recibieron porque el destino de su viaje era Jerusalén.

 

Miércoles ( Juan 1 ) Jesús vio a Natanael que venía hacia él y dijo de él: “Aquí hay un verdadero hijo de Israel. No hay duplicidad en él ". Natanael le dijo: "¿Cómo me conoces?" Jesús respondió y le dijo: "Antes de que Felipe te llamara, te vi debajo de la higuera".

 

Jueves ( Lucas 10 ) “ La mies es mucha , pero los obreros pocos; Por tanto, pídele al dueño de la mies que envíe obreros para su mies. Sigue tu camino; he aquí, os envío como corderos entre lobos.

 

Viernes ( Lucas 10 ) “¡Ay de ti, Corazín ! ¡Ay de ti, Betsaida! Porque si las maravillas que se hicieron en medio de ustedes se hubieran hecho en Tiro y Sidón, hace mucho tiempo se habrían arrepentido, sentados en cilicio y cenizas.

 

S ÁBADO ( Mateo 18 ) “¿Quién es el mayor en el reino de los cielos?” Llamó a un niño, lo colocó en medio de ellos y dijo: “En verdad, les digo que a menos que se vuelvan y se vuelvan como niños, no entrarán en el Reino de los cielos.

26 de septiembre : Cosme y Damián, mártires (m. 287), eran gemelos que se convirtieron en médicos. Fueron notados porque nunca le cobraron a nadie una tarifa médica. Murieron en la persecución de Diocleciano. Se les han atribuido grandes milagros y se dice que el emperador Justiniano fue sanado por su intercesión.

 

27 de septiembre : Vincent de Paul, sacerdote (1581-1660 ), fue un campesino francés que fue seleccionado para ser capellán en la casa de la Reina después de su ordenación. Proporcionó comida y ropa a los pobres, incluidas las prostitutas, los enfermos, los discapacitados y las personas sin hogar. Fundó la Congregación de Misiones (Vicentinos) para predicar y capacitar al clero y cofundó las Hijas de la Caridad con Louise de Marillac.

 

28 de septiembre : Wenceslao, mártir (907-929), fue criado cristiano por su abuela, mientras que su madre y su hermano se oponían al cristianismo. Su hermano se le opuso cuando se convirtió en gobernante de Bohemia en 922. 29 de septiembre : Miguel, Gabriel y Rafael, los arcángeles son durante mucho tiempo parte de las escrituras cristianas y judías. Miguel es el ángel que lucha contra el mal como cabeza de todos los ángeles; Gabriel anuncia la llegada del mesías y los nacimientos de Jesús y Juan el Bautista; y Rafael es un ángel de la guarda que protege a Tobías en su viaje. Juntos, son venerados para representar a todos los ángeles durante un período de tres días.

 

30 de septiembre : Jerónimo, sacerdote y médico (342-420), estudió griego y latín de joven después de su bautismo por el Papa Liberio . Aprendió hebreo cuando se convirtió en monje y después de la ordenación estudió las escrituras con Gregory Nazianzen en Constantinopla. Se convirtió en secretario del Papa cuando se le pidió que tradujera la Biblia al latín.

 

De octubre de 1 : T stos de Lisieux, médico (1873-1 8 97 ), entró en el Carmelo a los 15 años y murió a los 24 años de tuberculosis. Durante su enfermedad, Pauline, su priora, le pidió que escribiera sobre su vida en el convento. Estas historias están capturadas en "La historia de un alma". Se centró en su "pequeña manera" de buscar la santidad en la vida diaria.

 

2 de octubre: Los ángeles de la guarda son mensajeros e intermediarios entre Dios y los humanos. Nos ayudan en nuestra lucha contra el mal y sirven como guardianes, la fiesta que celebramos hoy. Rafael es uno de los guardianes sobre los que se escribe en el Libro de Tobías. Se añadió un monumento al calendario romano en 1670 en acción de gracias por su ayuda.

 

Esta semana en la historia de los jesuitas

 

·                26 de septiembre de 1605. En Roma, el Papa Pablo V declaró oralmente a San Luis como uno de los "Bienaventurados". El escrito oficial apareció el 19 de octubre.

·                27 de septiembre de 1540. El Papa Pablo III firmó la Bula Regimini Militantis Ecclesiae , que estableció la Compañía de Jesús.

·                28 de septiembre de 1572. Quince jesuitas llegaron a México para establecer la Provincia Mexicana. Pronto abrieron una universidad.

·                29 de septiembre de 1558. En Gesu , Roma y otros lugares, los jesuitas comenzaron a mantener el Coro, en obediencia a una orden de Pablo IV. Esta práctica duró menos de un año, hasta la muerte del Papa en agosto de 1559.

·                30 de septiembre de 1911. El presidente William Howard Taft visitó la Universidad de Saint Louis y declaró abierta la temporada de fútbol.

·                1 de octubre de 1546. Isabel Roser fue liberada de sus votos jesuitas por San Ignacio después de ocho meses.
